EVENTS IN TERM 1

Year 1 :  Term 1 has got off to a flying start this year with some fantastic learning. We have all enjoyed our Toys topic, with the big highlight being a lovely trip to Blaise Castle.  The children explored toys from the past and present, looking at how they worked, what they were made from and thinking about how toys have changed.  Their Pinocchio stories in Literacy were super and they went on to write some great reports about toys from the past and the present.  In Maths, the children have developed expert knowledge at working within 10 and have a good grasp of a range of visual and practical models.  We have been impressed by how well they have begun coding work on the Purple Mash program using the Ipads and they have shown thoughtful work in our RE topic about creation stories.

They should all feel very proud of their first term!

Year 2 :  This term Year 2 have been looking at the underwater world! In literacy we have been writing about Dougal’s Deep Sea Diving Adventure. We have made up our own underwater adventure stories. We have written reports about clown fish and blue tang fish. We also had a chance to present our reports in the style of news reporters.  In Geography, we have looked at the 5 different oceans and the countries surrounding them and landmarks in Britain. We went on our school trip to Weston aquarium. We had a fantastic tour around the aquarium and learnt about all the fish and underwater animals. We had the chance to feel shark and ray eggs. Then we had chance to make sandcastles on the beach.

Year 3 :  This term, Year 3 have been exploring the topic Ancient Egypt! In literacy, we began by reading Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx, we then used the text to help us to write our own stories. We also wrote instructions on How to Care for Your Camel, before we invented our own animal instructions!  In History, we were amazed by discovering an ancient tomb, right here in school! We also explored how to write like an Egyptian, using hieroglyphics and we created our own gods and goddesses. As part of our topic, we had the opportunity to visit Bristol Museum to take part in an Egyptian workshop, where we looked at artefacts and saw a real-life mummy!

EVENTS IN TERM 2

Year 1 : Year 1 have had another super term, jam packed with learning and fun.  It all started with some explosive learning about Volcanoes during our Natural Disaster days and we loved making our own clay volcanoes and using baking soda and vinegar to create our own eruptions. The Great Fire of London topic took us on a great journey back in time, learning about this fascinating historical event.  We really enjoyed bringing it to life on our drama day and our art day resulted in some fabulous collage work, which we now proudly have on display in the KS1 corridor.  In Literacy, we had lots of fun exploring the book, Small Knight and George and the Chocolate cake and used this to write our own quest stories, which were brilliant. Inspired by the chocolate theme, we learnt to write recipe instructions and had two fun baking sessions making rice crispy cakes.  We moved on to exploring numbers to 20 in maths and we also spent time learning about 2D and 3D shapes and how to find halves of shapes, objects and amounts.  How we had time to produce an incredible Christmas performance, we don’t know! But we did and the children did us proud as always.  What a great way to end the year!

Year 2 : Year 2 have had a great term! We started the term off learning all about volcanoes. We made our own volcanoes out of clay and erupted them using baking soda and vinegar. We made our own volcano art by splattering paint to make the lava. We then had three days focusing on anti-bullying. We know the 3 things that make it bullying and how to tell an adult. We had a great workshop from unique voice to show us that everyone is different and that’s what makes us unique. Year 2 have had a term focusing on space exploration. We have learnt all about the great space race and how Neil Armstrong was the first man to step on the moon. We then worked our space topic into our writing. We wrote diaries and newspaper reports on man stepping on the moon. We had a wow event where we had a star projector and spent the afternoon exploring them and learning their names and stories.

Year 3 : Year 3 have had another great term, full of lots of exciting learning! The term started with anti-bullying days with year 3 exploring racism specifically. The year 3’s produced some thought provoking poems, a compliment rap and odd socks to reflect people’s differences. We also enjoyed science days with year 4, where we learned all about tsunamis and then we were tasked with engineering a parachute which could protect an egg! Mr Parcell took year 3 for an exclusive trip to the Fair Furlong boiler room as part of innovating our class story for this term, which focused on familiar settings. Year 3 have also had a very active term, with the introduction of sports at Breakfast Club with the sports coaches; skip-2-b-fit coming in to do a workshop; and finally Scott Chappel from Somerset County Cricket Club visited us to give an assembly and run a cricket workshop! Year 2 have been looking at materials this term! We looked at why things are made out of different materials and the different properties materials have. We used a range of materials to create collages of our own fairy tale scenes. In Literacy we have been looking at traditional tales. We have been writing our own Little Red Riding Hood stories and have read the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We then planted our very own bean seed and wrote instructions for others to follow.  We had great fun learning all about being safe on the internet. We know that it is important to ask permission and to ask for help if we are not sure about something.  We finished the term off by making houses for the Three Little Pigs, using lots of different materials.

Year 3 :   Term 3 started off with a Harry Potter maths week. Year 3 worked hard solving problems and cracking codes!  Our topic this term has been Revolutionary Romans. We found that plants grow best when they have water and sunlight. We have been working hard in literacy to be really persuasive. We planned an exciting Mr Men party and had to write invites that would persuade people to come. We had a fantastic party and it was a great reward for all our hard work this term!
