How we teach phonics

In every class, from Nursery to Year 6, the children receive daily lessons in phonics (letters and sounds) or spelling.  These are essential skills which support children in learning to read and also to write to a high standard.  From the beginning it is really important that everyone, including all the staff and our families, pronounce the sounds to children in the same way to avoid causing any confusion.  It is also something that we often are asked about because many of us were taught in a different way when we were at school.

On this page you will find a series of videos of Mrs. Milne where she says each of the sounds which we hope you will find useful.

The sounds are grouped and taught in several phases. On this page you will see a video of Phase 2, 3 and 5 sounds. In all phases there are some sounds that are really quiet - e.g. 't'; 'c'; 'ch'; 'ph'.  All the sounds should be as short as possible - there should be no 'er' sound.
