TERM 3

Year 5/6 Boys Football

Our Year 5 and 6 football team had their chance to show what they are made of this term. They took part in 3 tournaments across the term. Once again this was a first for Fair Furlong, also with 2 teams entering. All the boys were brilliant in working as a team with the older children making sure the younger ones were involved at every opportunity. There were some fantastic performances: Mitchell Lewis (Y6) running the midfield and scoring some fantastic goals; Taio Fennel (Y6) driving the defence, not being afraid to face any school not matter their size or ability; Aiden Viner (Y5) showed tremendous composure up front, despite being one of the younger children; McKenzie Smith Chivers kept clean sheets from in goal on many occasions, throwing himself at anything in order to protect the goal! A special mention must also go to Mason Thatcher (Y6) who was nominated for a sportsmanship award, winning a match day ticket to a Bristol City home game. Well done Mason, it was fantastic to see you show us what you are capable of!

Arts Week – Expressive Dance

During Arts Week our children took part in dance workshops with dance teacher Jodie Hancocks in learning and adapting a piece of expressive arts. They used one of Banksy’s iconic pieces of graffiti to show the emotion and feeling behind this creation named ‘There is always hope’. It was fantastic to see all year groups fully commit to this and come out of their comfort zone in showing what emotions could be taken from this powerful image.

Archery

Throughout term 3 and 4 the children have had access to a new afterschool club in the shape of archery. In preparation to this classes from Year 2 to 4 took part in an enrichment event where they had the opportunity to learn techniques in how to use the equipment safely and build on their accuracy of hitting the target. This club has been a great success. Look out for new clubs starting in term 5 and 6!

Dodgeball

This was the second tournament our team has entered this year. Once again representing our school with pure positivity! Despite having some new additions to the team this time around, it did not take long for them to figure out their role and gel as a unit. They came fourth overall, however ended up winning King of the Court in the tournament! Great maturity shown from all!

Year 2 Dance Festival

With the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo this year, Seal Class in year 2 have been practicing hard in creating a piece of dance to ‘Wave the Flag’ to celebrate this event. The children worked extremely hard and were praised on how much they had adapted and made the dance their own by the School Sports Partnership. They even used our school flag which has recently been on a journey to the Antartica! On the day of the festival Miss Smith and all the adults that supported could not talk highly enough of how well our children did. They were amazing and have loved every part of this festival. They were so excited they wanted to show Mr Stevens and his year 6 class, Mrs Lang and Mrs Andrews what they had done – we are all so very proud of them! A special mention to Miss Smith and Jodie Hancocks (One of our year 2 pupils parent) for all the time and effort they gave in preparing the children.

Chinese New Year Dance

This term our children celebrated Chinese New Year! As part of their week they took part in some traditional Chinese dance. They learnt how performers move and manipulate a real Chinese dragon, needing to work as a team to move this beast around in a graceful artistic manner. They also got the opportunity to use Chinese umbrellas to recreate and link steps in this traditional dance.

Glow in the dark dodgeball

Throughout term 3 and 4 the children have had access to a new first time activity club in the shape of glow in the dark dodgeball. This sport is exactly what means – children use UV equipment in a darkened room with exciting lighting while the game is in play. In preparation to this, classes from Year 5 and 6 took part in an enrichment event where they had the opportunity to learn the correct way to play dodgeball, reinforcing respect and sportsmanship between teams. This club has certainly created a lot of buzz around the school and has been extremely popular. New clubs will be starting in terms 5 and 6 to replace glow in the dark dodgeball and archery.
