TERM 2

Indoor Athletics Competition

At the end of November some our Athletics team competed in the area indoor athletics competition. This competition saw some of our strongest athletes across year 5 and 6 compete with 7 other schools from across the south of Bristol. Our children were fantastic as ever, with some of our children being recognised by the organisers as having outstanding potential! After some extremely close track events our children managed to so secure a strong 4th place. We are extremely proud of this team, being their first event in athletics ever and being recognised as the 4th best in the south! Well done, and we look forward to our team competing in the summer athletics competition.

BMXing

Throughout the last 2 terms some of our children have had the opportunity to take part in weekly BMXing sessions, in partnership with Access Sport. This enrichment programme was used to not only to teach the children basic cycling proficiency and at a later stage allow the children to have a go at some basic BMXing skills, but also was ran to promote confidence, self esteem and teamwork amongst the group. Towards the end of the session one of our pupils was highly commended on his BMXing ability and has been asked to join a local club! During term 3 the children will be getting the opportunity to go along to a new BMXing track that is being developed in Hartcliffe. We are extremely proud of the children who have participated in this programme, they have shown fantastic resilience and a growth mindset to this activity!

On Thursday 14th November some of our year 5 and 6 children participated in an indoor athletics tournament. This tournament was for children to try this version of athletics, and for school to recognise any emerging gifted and talented children. All of our children performed fantastically, once again being commended on their sportsmanship and behaviour! It is was clear that Fair Furlong have some brilliant athletes. With Lucia Archard setting a record for the girls javelin and Mitchell Lewis setting a record for the girls speed bounce. The school will be competing in the competitive event on the 28th of November. The children will know who is in the team in the coming week. A special mention should also be made to Stevie-Leigh Tolliver, who has played in both basketball and athletics this week. Stevie-Leigh was a prime example of someone showing fantastic resilience, and a general love for all things sporting. Well done Stevie!

Basketball Tournament

This term our Basketball team have been competing in a series of mini tournaments over a four week period. From where our children started, they have shown some amazing progression! Miss McArdle has done a fantastic job in coaching our children and the team have shown brilliant commitment to her. The children came 5th overall in their league out of 12 schools and held their own against some schools that have been taking part in this sport for years! A big thank you must got to Miss McArdle and Miss Baker for taking the children to all of these events, it would not happen without them. And well done to our children for showing exemplary behavior and sportsmanship again!  The head of the Schools Sports Partnership has said, Fair Furlong is back on the map in primary school sports!!!

Dodgeball

Our dodgeball team played their first tournament at the end of term 2. Considering this was the first time we had entered in to this up and coming sport at primary level, our children were fantastic, faultless even. They ended up winning the tournament! Also being commended by the School Sports Partnership organisers in showing fantastic determination and sportsmanship through the entire tournament. Excellent result team!
