Welcome to Funafuti class

Funafuti is the capital city of Tuvulua, which is a country made up of nine islands in the South Pacific and is the planet's fourth smallest nation. It is covered in beautiful beaches and is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.  A conservation area for Green Sea Turtles has been set up around the island to protect this incredible animal.  We are enjoying learning about this fascinating city and country while we can, as it is predicted that the islands will have disappeared in the next 50 -100 years due to rising sea levels.  It is still part of the British Commonwealth and you can see the Union Jack on the country's flag.

Weekly topic homework will be set using Google Classroom and children can submit their learning through the platform.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Term 6

The children have really thrown themselves into our Brunel topic this term and have produced some wonderful work about his greatest achievements.  In literacy, we explored fantasy texts and focused on dragons and were blown away by the beautiful story writing they did. We have enjoyed investigating different materials over the term and the children did some excellent testing to find out which was the bounciest ball and which is the best material to make a boat.  In maths, we took on the challenge of adding and subtracting numbers when they crossed ten and were really impressed with how the children began to grasp this.  They are a super bunch of learners ready for Year 3 now!

Term 5

Our learning has quite literally taken off this term as we have been on an incredible journey exploring the question: How did Bristol fill the skies?  We have learnt about significant events in Bristol by looking at the building of concorde and its final flight and explored the history of hot air balloons.  We enjoyed some super experiments launching balloon rockets, paper aeroplanes and testing our own homemade hot air balloon. Through all of these we learnt about forces and explored carrying out different tests. The children wrote really creative stories inspired by the Great Balloon Hullaballo and then had a go at writing explanation texts about how hot air balloons and paper aeroplanes fly.  It was also lovely to have an RE day this term and the children’s work on Mosques and Churches was great and their artwork was particularly stunning. The children’s enthusiasm for the topic and high standard of work has blown us away!

Term 4
It has been lovely to be back together in school and this term we have enjoyed exploring and comparing the cities of Bristol and Mumbai. Our key question was: Would living in India be the same as living in Bristol? We have compared the physical features of these places, learning some great new geography vocabulary and using aerial pictures and google earth to help our research.  We also looked closely at landmarks and human features in Bristol, describing the location of these places using compass directions and even creating our own maps using colours and symbols to represent key places.  The children have written amazing guides about these places and super postcards as they worked hard to imagine what it would be like to visit them.

Term 3

Well, it wasn’t quite the Term 3 we expected, but it has been a fantastic term in so many ways nonetheless.   We have been so impressed with the enthusiasm, determination and resilience the children have continued to show whether at home or at school and some great learning has been achieved.

It has been an incredible team effort between teachers, teaching assistants and parents and we are very grateful for how everyone has pulled together to make the term a real success for our children.  Thank you!

The children have been on a wonderful writing journey resulting in the creation and publishing of some imaginative and well written Traditional Tales which created such a great picture for the reader. In maths, we have worked hard to know our number facts to and within 10 so fluently that we can write fact families in seconds!

Our topic question has been, What keeps animals and people going?  We have explored this through life cycles, looking at food, hygiene and exercise and we extended this into design and technology so that we created healthy fruit salads that we ate to keep ourselves going!

Term 2
All our learning has been around the world and our big question – What colour is our world? We looked at the oceans, continents, United Kingdom and features. To inspire our writing, we used the Big Book of Blue and Lila and the Secret of Rain. In maths we have been working on money, exploring shape and addition and subtraction. We also made a superb clay model of the nativity on our RE day.

Term 1
All our learning has been around the book Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers. We used it to write a guidebook, a diary and poems. Our topic has looked at exploring the question ‘How do animals survive?’. To answer this we looked at animal habitats, micro habitats, the food web and a healthy human diet. In maths we have learnt all about place value and how we can make and break numbers in lots of ways. Recently we have been looking at addition and subtraction
