Welcome to Doha class

Did you know?... Qatar has lots of oil reserves and is the richest country in the world!

Doha is the capital city of the State of Qatar with a population of 956,460 (that’s more than the population of Bristol.

Doha is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf and has a hot, desert climate. The summer is very long and very hot and the winter is short and still very warm. It hardly ever rains and can sometimes go for 4 months between rain showers!

Hopefully you will find this page useful to find out about what we are learning each term, see some examples and read our year group newsletter. Term 6

In Reception, Term 6 has followed the question, ‘What would you find under the sea?’  It has been fascinating learning about a range of sea creatures, including crabs, turtles, jellyfish and octopus, with the children using a range of texts to further their understanding - we have learnt all sorts of weird and wonderful facts! We have also been creatively making our own sea creatures and role-playing a submarine adventure!

Our Sports Day, despite needing to be delayed, was a huge success and it was wonderful to watch the children trying a range of activities, movements and supporting each other to have a go!

Term 5

We have been exploring the question, how do living things grow? We have been busy experimenting with cress seeds, testing to see which would grow the most (no water, a little water and lots of water!). As well as this, we planted runner bean seeds in wet kitchen roll and attached them to the window, watching as they started to grow! Other exploring has involved planting in the garden, taking apart plants to look at the different parts and looking at a range of books about growing. The children have had lots of interesting questions and really enjoyed noticing the changes in our experiments.

The story of Jack and the Beanstalk has been an exciting way to think about growing and we even had a, ‘climb the beanstalk,’ day where we were left clues by the giant! It has been super developing our storytelling using this story and also changing it to create our own!

Term 4
Our Spring into the Farm topic has been fascinating this term! We have found out what animals produce and how this helps us. We have also been learning about animals and their young and how they are cared for.

We have developed our storytelling skills through learning the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff – even changing the story to create and act out our own versions!

Writing has taken off in the form of labelling, with the children taking a particular interest in labelling each other – here we were able to practise applying our phonics skills in our tasks.

The children have continued develop their use of loose parts to develop their play, some children choosing to build bridges for the Three Billy Goats Gruff!

Term 3
We have had a very different term, but have been incredibly impressed at all the amazing learning going on at both school and in homes! Well done everybody!

We have journeyed far from Bristol and ‘explored’ Kenya in a range of ways, learning about a day in the life of a Kenyan school child as well as traditional food, dance, music, clothing, buildings and the flag. Animals in Kenya have been of particular interest with the children and we have seen some fantastic creations using many different materials and loose parts.

Through the story, Handa’s Surprise written by Eileen Browne, a story set in Kenya, we have continued to develop our story-telling, reading and writing skills, including writing lists for Handa and creating our own versions of the story. Exploring number has also continued, with further focus on composition of number and representing number in a range of ways. Children learning at home have been very resourceful in creating ten frames, including straws and sticks – this has been a very useful tool to support their maths.

In Reception this term, we have been thinking about what is up in the sky and beyond? We have been exploring colour and light and all the names of the planets in the Solar System. The children have also built amazing space stations in their outdoor areas!

The children worked really hard rehearsing and learning the songs for our production of The Nativity.  Their performances have been amazing!

We have continued our phonics sessions and the children are working hard on learning to write their letters. We have also been learning about instructions and make fruit rockets for Baby Bear to take to the moon, following our own instructions using ‘bossy’ words.

We have also been working hard and becoming super maths wizards! We have been learning to add and subtract, count reliably, recognise numbers and find one more or less than a number up to 10. We have been exploring number lots in our play and enjoyed exploring capacity with ‘reindeer food’!

Term 1

During our first term we have been busy settling into life in reception, exploring our environments and making new friends!

We have been woodland detectives exploring our school forest, going on nature walks and learning lots of interesting facts about woodland animals and their habitats. After collecting a range of materials on a forest walk, we made Andy Goldsworthy inspired outdoor art!

Using the book, Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers, we have had time each day to look at the wonderful pictures and talk about things we know about the world. The children expressed a lot of interest, particular in planets and space!

We enjoyed daily zooms and videos from Mrs Davies and Mrs Undy during a time of home learning, including a fancy dress zoom, sharing home learning tasks and phonics hunting!
