Fair Furlong offers a precisely planned and targeted curriculum that promotes healthy life choices, positive wellbeing and is stimulated by first-hand experience, ensuring explicit links in children’s knowledge and understanding are secured. At Fair furlong, we aim to provide our children with a rich and diverse topic based curriculum which meets the requirements of the National Curriculum; as well as supporting their development as lifelong learners, who enjoy the challenges and achievements of education.
We recognise the specific needs of each of the children in our care and design our curriculum to reflect these needs and the core school values explicitly through our long, medium and short term planning and implicitly through the expectations we uphold in our daily interactions with the children. The school values permeate all aspects of our school life and reflect our dedication and commitment to delivering the best possible provision to each child. This includes: during lessons and assemblies, within the playground and when on off-site educational visits.
In response to the needs of our community, we apply a skills based curriculum, firmly focused on building and developing firm foundations in literacy and numeracy, including spelling and handwriting. Governors are committed to ensuring financial support to secure rich and practical experiences for all children across the school. In order to enrich our quality first classroom and intervention practice, we commit a substantial portion of our budget to providing visitors to school, educational visits and school camps, which create memorable learning opportunities for the children to build upon both cultural and practical first hand experiences which they bring with them to school. We target and track the spending of our funds to ensure that children have opportunities to partake in extracurricular experiences, aimed at building confidence, developing resilience and support in securing healthy lifestyles.
Our curriculum is organised and managed by an Assistant Headteacher, who has responsibility for mapping and overseeing the delivery of the curriculum and the management of the subject leaders. We use a topic model to deliver the curriculum, aiming to utilise a cross-curricular approach to learning whenever possible. The curriculum content is carefully tailored to match age related expectations and the needs of the children; and is applied with a commonality of approach across the school. Each year we programme in focused learning opportunities, such as World Days and Engineering weeks, so that our children can experience the togetherness of working to a whole school theme and we can address the curriculum areas to specific needs in the development of our learners. These blocks of learning also enable us to address learning about British Values and provide us with further opportunities to equip the children to be positive contributors to British society. Personal, Social and Health Education plays an important role in our curriculum and enables us to address children’s emotional needs as effectively as their academic needs. We review the curriculum yearly, in order to guarantee that provision is effective, well matched to need and allows us to plan for significant upcoming National or World Events. Similarly, we maintain the flexibility in our curriculum to respond to any current affairs which are relevant to our children. We use detailed assessment data to measure the impact of our curriculum (see Assessment Guidance Pages) and to ensure that we are delivering value for money together with equality of opportunities and outcomes for all. At Fair Furlong we hold strongly to our motto ‘The best that we can be’ and believe that our curriculum provides the foundation in which all children are able to achieve this, whilst preparing them to continue the level of success they have experienced with us throughout the rest of their education and life.
